El Capitan is only available if you or your mac meet at least one of condition below.
- You have downloaded El Capitan in past with the same Apple ID
- The mac is NOT compatible with the later macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)
- The mac is compatible with High Sierra but still running 10.6.8 〜 10.7.4.
- Mac mini (Early 2009 or later) Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later) As well as: Mac OS X version 10.6.8 or later; 2GB of RAM; 8GB of free disk space; If you have a Mac that is compatible with El Capitan but not Sierra, and have not yet upgraded to El Capitan, it is not too late to do so.
- I have a Mid 2010 MacBook (2.4 GHz, 4GB) on Sierra which has always felt slow no matter which version of the operating system it has been on. My other (similarly specced) Mac, a Late 2009 Mac mini (2.53 GHz, 4GB), has never felt slow. But it hasn't and can't be updated beyond El Capitan. The MacBook takes a long time to get going.

So you can download El Capitan only if you downloaded it before.
If you did not download El Capitan before, but El Capitan is your only choice, you need a mac that is either:
- Compatible with El Capitan but not with High Sierra.
- Compatible with High Sierra but still running 10.6.8 ~ 10.7.4
Otherwise High Sierra is your only choice for OS upgrade.

If you have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro, you can't update the OS. To update, you need a MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or later) Model 6.2 and higher.

If you are careful about what you download and where you search on the Internet, your computer is useable without the latest security updates. My last computer had a 10.6 partition which I used every night. That was after El Capitan was released, so the OS was 5 versions behind. Nclex review 4000 for mac. By being careful, I never had any problems.
I would make sure that you had at least 2 separate backups on 2 separate drives in case you have problems. That will allow you to recover.
